What is the difference between a handpan and a tongue drum?

The handpan is made of two steel shells assembled and hand-tuned. It is played exclusively with the fingers and offers rich harmonics, subtle nuances, and long sustain.

The tongue drum, on the other hand, is cut with “tongues” in the metal. It is more intuitive, often more accessible for beginners, and can be played with the hands or mallets. The sound is generally softer and shorter than that of a handpan.

Nitrided steel or stainless steel: which should you choose?

Nitrided steel: warm, deep, traditional sound. Good projection. Requires regular maintenance to prevent rust.

Stainless steel: more crystalline sound with longer sustain. Highly resistant to humidity and requires little maintenance.

The choice depends on your sound preference and your environment (dry or humid climate).

How do I choose the scale of my handpan?

The choice of scale depends on the emotion you’re looking for:

Minor scales: meditative, introspective atmosphere
Major scales: bright and joyful
Oriental or specific scales: more mystical atmospheres

If you are a beginner, we recommend a versatile and intuitive scale. We can advise you based on your goals (meditation, performance, therapy, etc.).

How many notes do I need (8, 9, 10+)?

8–9 notes: ideal for beginners, balanced and easy to explore
10 notes and more: more melodic and harmonic possibilities, suited for musicians seeking complexity

More notes = more possibilities, but also a slightly longer learning curve.

Is the tongue drum suitable for children / meditation?

Yes, absolutely. Thanks to its harmonious notes (often tuned to avoid dissonance), it is very accessible for children and ideal for relaxation, meditation, yoga, or sound therapy.

A custom order generally requires 4 to 8 weeks, depending on the chosen scale and production workload. Each instrument is handcrafted and carefully tuned.
